Comskil's CMMI Interpretation, Implementation, and Procedure Writing Workshop (CIIPW Workshop)
(return to training page)
CMMI has the capability to substantially improve an organization's effectiveness, but it occasionally gets a bad name, usually because of poor implementations. Procedures can be voluminous and wordy, either too prescriptive or too vague, and can be difficult to read. Organizational processes should be streamlined into your workflow, they should be easy to use, easy to find, and not take a whole lot of extra effort. They should help, not hinder your work.
To create the processes that work best for you and your company, you need to know what should be written and how to write it. You need to know how to interpret the CMMI and how to implement it effectively for your organization. Comskil created the CIIPW Writing Workshop to address these needs. We offer it for organizations wanting to achieve Maturity Levels 2 through 5.
This two (Maturity Level 2) or three (Maturity Levels 3-5) day workshop's objectives provide:
- An overview of the CMMI structure
- Elements of a good organizational process
- How to develop processes that are easy to implement
- How to use the CMMI as a reference when developing processes
- How to interpret the CMMI for implementation
Comskil works with your process lead to ensure that your organization is ready for the workshop by the following preparations:
- Map your organizations typical workflow(s)
- Complete or update the process improvement plan and schedule
- Provide templates for Process Action Team (PAT) plans and work with the process lead to complete the PAT Plans
- Combine the CMMI process areas to correspond with your organization's workflow
- Provide examples and work with the process lead to develop policy and procedure templates that are distributed to each PAT team for use in developing the processes
We tailor each workshop to your organization's needs and goals, starting with the following basic contents:
Day One
Provide the course objectives and address student expectations, introduce the PATs and define their purpose, provide the roles, responsibilities, and points of contact for your process organization and your process schedule.
Provide a background to the CMMI and CMMI terms and definitions. We walk through the structure of the CMMI, including examples to help student navigate the CMMI quickly and effectively. We review each Maturity Level 2 process area and the practices within and discuss how your organization implements each practice or how it could.
Day Two (Levels 3-5 only)
The process areas and practices for Maturity Levels 3 (or higher if requested) are discussed and applied. Discussion on how to interpret and implement each practice continues throughout the day. The day starts and ends with exercises performed within each PAT.
Day Three
We start by reviewing the organizations typical workflow(s). Many are a work in progress. We map the processes to the workflow and review the interconnections between the processes to get an understanding and to provide a goal for each student of how the organization's methodology should work when they have completed their tasks.
The PATs review their action plans, their deliverables, and their schedule and effort estimates. Each PAT draws a high-level process flow for their process areas. The templates for policy and procedures are reviewed and work begins. The instructors provide hands on guidance during the remainder of the workshop.
Comskil consultants are also available to follow up with your process team after the workshop to review organizational processes and provide feedback and helpful suggestions for improving them.
By working with your process lead and PAT teams before and during the workshop, this workshop will not only give you the tools you need to write effective organizational processes, but will get you started actually creating them. We use lots of examples and hands-on exercises in the process, making the workshop both effective and fun.
