Capability Maturity Model Integration for Services (CMMI-SVC)

CMMI-SVC provides a collection of industry and government best practices to guide the work of a service delivery organization. It builds on the past achievements and experiences of CMM and CMMI-DEV to deliver a process model focused on the unique needs of a service provide. And it draws on concepts and practices of other service-focused standards and models including:

• Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
• ISO/IEC 20000: Information Technology--Service Management
• Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (CobiT)
• Information Technology Services Capability Maturity Model (ITSCMM)

CMMI-SVC differs from these standards and models because it defines a service as an intangible, nonstorable product. This clearly applies to information technology services, but it also applies to a far wider range of service organizations. It is particularly telling that only 33% of formal CMMI-SVC appraisals are to engineering and management services organizations. Transportation, Finance, Insurance, Real Estate, and other types of organizations have already adopted CMMI-SVC as their framework for service delivery.

CMMI-SVC practices are organized into 24 process areas in 4 categories. CMMI uses the term maturity level to rate or score an organizations evolution and performance in implementing and adhering to the model. This description is commonly used as a requirement in contracts to identify companies with acceptible performance. Maturity Levels range from 1 to 5 with Maturity Level 3 rapidly becoming a basic requirement for Government work.
